Health is a condition of mental, physical and social well being in which infirmity and disease are absent. It is the sum total of all the conditions that affect the body, mind and spirit in their interactions with each other, with the environment and with one another. It is the sum total of all human activities and thoughts as they interact and balance one another. The pursuit of health brings within it the quest for knowledge and understanding of the impact of health on the body, mind and spirit of individuals. For an individual to attain and maintain good health, it is important that he or she knows the difference between good health and bad health and how to sustain and improve the latter.

Good health involves a healthy diet, regular exercise, balanced diet and use of stress management techniques. It also involves making changes in lifestyle choices, such as reducing or eliminating exposure to environmental toxins, smoking, alcohol, and unhealthy forms of recreation like video games, gambling and sitting in front of a computer screen too long. An individual’s health is also affected by the extent of chronic diseases and what they mean to the body, like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, obesity and osteoporosis. The more severe the illnesses, the more important it is to maintain good health.

The term “mental well-being” refers to the psychological and social aspects of an individual’s well being. Mental well-being is directly influenced by physical well-being as well as the quality of life lived. It is the combination of the two that produces a total mental and physical well being.

The United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as having a normal quantity of physical education, medical care and living expectancy at the age of 65 years old. It is important to note that mental health and total physical health are not necessarily correlated and that in some cases there may be a significant contribution of both to the individuals’ overall health condition. The state of health and the quality of life have great significance for an individual’s happiness, well-being and productivity in the work place, at home and in the community.
